Short course description: the course involves familiarizing students with the scientific foundations of modern conflict science, in particular with regard to conflict theories, their causes, reconciliation strategies, the role of diplomacy and public diplomacy in the settlement of international conflicts, the specifics of the application of the norms of international law to conflicts, the features of regional conflicts and ways for resolving them.
Why do this course? Dynamic transformations of the international system and the emergence of the newest challenges and threats, the growth of crisis phenomena in international politics, determine the actualization of knowledge and skills in the field of crisis management.
The need for professionals capable of not only analyzing the security environment at the national, regional, and global levels but also using the tools of crisis management and prevention of international conflicts has become particularly acute for Ukraine, which is forced to defend itself against Russia’s aggression.
The course engages students in simulated task force operations, drawing on real-life situations adapted for the classroom. The uniqueness of the course lies also in inviting outstanding practitioners working in the field of international relations to conduct classes.
“American model” of active participation and experiential learning will be applied during the course. The course is based on the most modern theoretical developments, combined with practical skills of working in an international environment and having an interdisciplinary nature.
The purpose of the course is to help students gain special knowledge and practical skills necessary to effectively address crises in the international context.
Course Objectives. The course will develop the student’s skills in the following areas:
- Understanding of the nature, the recent history of international politics and conflicts as well as legal means of their resolution and current trends in the application of such means.
- Facility with both the theory and practice of the process of foreign policy formulation and implementation, as well as main legal instruments for its provision.
- Mastering analytical skills needed to assess major global and regional foreign policy challenges facing different nations, as well as the skills of the proper legal qualification of facts and circumstances, including the use of international legal argumentation in the field of peaceful settlement of disputes.
- Practicing close simulations drawn from recent crisis management approaches by US and UN policy makers, as well as other international actors.
Participants:
- 35 students selected on a competitive basis by a committee comprised of US faculty. These 35 students will be able to earn certificates of participation if they fulfill course requirements.
- Others who are encouraged to follow the sessions as auditors/observers.

Schedule: course sessions will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 17:00 to 18:15 Kyiv time. Alternating sessions will include lecture/discussion sessions, usually on Mondays and Thursdays.
The course consists of 10 lectures and 10 practical classes conducted by recognized specialists in the field of international relations and international law from the USA and Ukraine. The start of the course is mid-September 2022, the duration is 10 weeks, and the number of credits is 4 ECTS (120 hours). The prominent selected speakers will be invited to the sessions, among them – journalists, diplomats, analysts, and area studies specialists.
For students of the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University credits received for a certificate course can be counted as an assessment of semester control (credit) for a selective (optional) educational component based on learning outcomes obtained through non-formal and/or information education (clause 3.5 of the Regulations on the procedure for recognizing the results of non-formal and/or information education of the Yaroslav Mudryi, National Law University).
The language of instruction is English.
The level of language proficiency is not lower than B2.
