Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University is a self-governing (autonomous) higher education institution of the 4th level of accreditation.
The history of the University dates back to the 19th century, when the Kharkiv Imperial University, which included a department of moral and political sciences, was established on November 17, 1804, by order of Emperor Alexander I. In 1835 it was officially renamed to the Faculty of Law of the University.
In 1920, by the decision of the Government of Ukraine, the Institute of National Economy was established on the basis of the Faculty of Law of Kharkiv University. It was basically an institution, which trained lawyers for the state bodies. The first lecturers of the Faculty of Law – the founders of the Institute – were well-known professors of law: V. Hordon, V. Koretskyi, O. Kisilov, V. Levytskyi, M. Maksymeiko, M. Paliienko, V. Slyvytskyi, V. Trakhterov and others who previously worked at Kharkiv University. Occupying teaching and research positions for many years, they have made a significant contribution to the formation and development of legal science and education and the training of lawyers. The Institute was renamed to Kharkiv Law Institute in 1937.
By the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of Ukraine of March 20, 1991, the Kharkiv Law Institute was reorganized into the Ukrainian State Law Academy. By the Decree of the President of Ukraine of March 30, 1995 № 267 the Academy was granted the status of a national self-governing (autonomous) state higher educational institution, and by the Decree of November 4, 1995 it was given the name of Yaroslav Mudryi. The Decree of the President of Ukraine No 457 of June 21, 2001 “Issues of Yaroslav Mudryi National Law Academy of Ukraine” granted additional rights to the Academy with the approval of the Statute by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 1194/2010 of December 24, 2010 and Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 2213-P of December 8, 2010 Yaroslav Mudryi National Law Academy of Ukraine was transformed into the National University “Yaroslav Mudryi Law Academy of Ukraine”.
According to the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine № 1697 of December 4, 2013, the National University “Mudryi Law Academy of Ukraine” was renamed to Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University.
