The School of Law of UCLan Cyprus is pleased to announce the online intensive course on Good neighbourliness in Europe in times of threats in the CRoLEV Intensive Course Series entitled “The Rule of Law and European Values in the modern ages”.

This 10-hour online delivery course (synchronous and asynchronous) looks at the interpretation and application of the principle of good neighbourliness in international law and EU law. Moreover, it looks at the functioning of the principle in EU law, focusing on three different legal contexts – on the functioning of the principle in the intra-EU interstate relations, in EU foreign relations and in EU enlargement. This course takes the form of 6 hours of asynchronous pre-recorded sessions and 4 hours of synchronous (‘live’) sessions. Upon registration to the synchronous sessions via the below link, access will also be granted to the pre-recorded sessions.

The course will cover the following themes:

  • Origins of the principle of good neighbourliness in international law: nature, legal basis and contents
  • Application of the principle of good neighbourliness in international law
  • Good neighbourliness in EU law
  • Application of the principle of good neighbourliness in EU enlargement
  • This course is relevant for any advanced student or professional interested in the legal framework of the good neighbourliness principle in international and EU law

UCLan Cyprus, through its Law School, is an accredited provider of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes under the relevant Cyprus Bar Association scheme. This Course is designed for the continuous professional development (CPD) of young and other professionals in Cyprus and internationally. Subject to CBA requirements, CPD points will be available for the two synchronous sessions taken together (4 hours).

The events will take place online via Microsoft Teams.

The course will be delivered in in the English language at an intermediate-to-advanced level.

Module Tutors:

Dr Elena Basheska is a Research Fellow at CEU Democracy Institute. She is a distinguished expert on the interpretation and application of the good neighbourliness principle in international law and EU law. Elena holds LL.M. in European law and Ph.D. in law from the Faculty of Law, University of Groningen (The Netherlands). Her research interests focus on international law, EU enlargement, EU external relations, rule of law, citizenship matters, and protection of human rights. She has extensive experience as a researcher, working in various sectors (including academia, NGOs, law firms and professional organisations), as well as an independent consultant.
